Is It Your Drain Field, or Just the Plumbing Line?

Often it is just the plumbing line, and checking that first can save you thousands. One call we ran started with slow drains and an occasional backup in a single bathroom. The cleanout had standing water in it, which is the moment a lot of companies start talking about a new drain field. We opened the septic tank instead. The water level sat below the outlet, right where it belongs, so the tank and the drain field were doing their jobs.

That sent us back to the pipe between the house and the tank. We set up a transit laser and shot elevations from the cleanout to the point where the line enters the tank. Part of the line had negative pitch, sloping back toward the house instead of downhill to the tank, so waste settled in the low spot and backed up. We relaid that section at the right grade and nothing else. No drain field, no tank work. If a quote jumps straight to replacement without anyone checking the tank level or the pitch, ask why. Our drain and sewer repair crews check both before recommending anything bigger.
